Invoicing Without GST or VAT as a Freelancer
By InvoicesKitPro · · 5 min read
When you are below the registration threshold, how to invoice without tax, what note to add and what changes when you register.
Not registered? Do not charge tax
If you are not registered for GST or VAT, you must not add it to your invoices. Charging tax you are not registered to collect is a serious problem, even if the client pays it.
Most countries have a turnover threshold below which registration is optional. Freelancers often stay under it in their early years.
What to put on the invoice
A non-tax invoice is simpler, but still needs the basics:
- Your name, contact details and a unique invoice number
- The client's name and address
- What you did, quantities and prices, and the total
- How to pay and by when
- Optionally, a note such as "Not registered under GST. GST not applicable."
Exports and foreign clients
Working for clients abroad is common for freelancers. Use the client's currency, and if you are registered, follow your country's export or reverse-charge rules. If you are not registered, the invoice simply has no tax.
When you register
Once registered, switch "Add taxes" on. The same invoice becomes a tax invoice with your tax ID and the right rates; everything you typed is kept.
