HSN vs SAC Codes: What They Are and How Many Digits You Need

By InvoicesKitPro · · 4 min read

HSN codes classify goods and SAC codes classify services. Here is how to find yours and how many digits to print on a GST invoice.

Goods use HSN, services use SAC

HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is an international system for classifying goods; India uses it for GST. SAC (Services Accounting Code) is India's own system for services, and SAC codes start with 99.

A printed brochure might be HSN 4911; graphic design services fall under SAC 998391. The code tells the tax department, and your client, what kind of supply it is and which rate applies.

How many digits to print

The number of digits depends on your turnover in the previous year. Smaller businesses usually print 4 digits and larger ones 6 digits, while exporters often use the full 8-digit code. The thresholds have changed over time, so check the current notification.

Finding your code

A few practical tips:

  • Search the official GST rate finder by product or service name
  • Use the code your supplier prints for goods you resell
  • Pick the most specific code that fits, not a general one
  • Keep codes in your saved items list so you never type them twice
