How to Write Payment Terms That Get You Paid Faster

By InvoicesKitPro · · 5 min read

Clear payment terms reduce late payments. Examples of due dates, early payment discounts and the details clients need to pay you.

Put the due date in plain sight

Terms like "Net 30" are familiar to accountants but not to everyone. Show an actual date: "Due 25 November 2026". The generator prints the due date next to the amount due so it is the first thing the client sees.

Make paying effortless

Most late payments are not deliberate; they are friction. Include:

  • Bank name, account name, account number or IBAN and bank code
  • A UPI ID or QR code for Indian clients
  • The invoice number to quote as the payment reference
  • Who to contact with questions

Choose sensible terms

Shorter terms get paid sooner: "due on receipt" or 7 to 15 days works for small jobs, while large companies often insist on 30 to 60 days. Agree the terms before the work starts and repeat them on every invoice.

An early payment discount ("2% off if paid within 7 days") can speed things up, but it also reduces your income, so use it with care.

Example wording

"Payment due within 15 days of the invoice date by bank transfer. Please quote the invoice number. Late payments may attract interest as permitted by law."
